Engaging Places, Engaging Children!

I met up with Jan Spencer at York St John University this afternoon...

Jan and I worked together in Leeds where she worked with the study support/extended services team in Inner East Leeds developing the 'All Together Now' Project and the first ever school based BBC Media Centre at Primrose High School. The 'al-2-gether-now' project started at Shakespeare Primary School and was a community, family and schools project which grew and developed into something truly amazing thanks to Jan and other brilliant colleagues. Jan is now Partnership Development Manager in the Faculty of Education and Theology ay York St John University.

Jan is currently organising a one-day conference on 14 June with the Commission for the Built Environment (CABE) to explore how settings other than schools can be used to develop learning outside the classroom. 'Engaging Places, Engaging Children' will explore how schools, initial teacher education and partner organisations can support teachers and trainee teachers to think and work creatively with their environment. Jan wanted me to provide an input to the conference on 'Brilliant Places for Learning' and to work with her to strengthen and develop learning networks to help schools understand the potential of the local and regional environment for learning. There will be sessions on making architecture count, the RSA area based curriculum, cultural partnerships, sensory learning and forest schools. Sounds like a brilliant conference and I'll let you know more when the details are confirmed.
