Abbey House Museum

Abbey House is another of the brilliant learning places I am working with...

I visited the house yesterday with Sue Davies, Head of Learning and Audience Development for the Museums and Galleries Service in Leeds.
It was wonderful to walk around this little piece of magic and to spend some time with Sam Flavin who is the knowledgeable, passionate and amazing site keeper at Abbey House and Kirkstall Abbey. Abbey House was the gatehouse to Kirkstall Abbey and opened to the public as a museum in 1927. During the 1950s Victorian street scenes were added bringing the museum alive for children and families.

In 1995, the centenary of the reopening of Kirkstall Abbey by the city, it was decided to raise the money needed to redisplay and improve facilities for visitors. The Heritage Lottery Fund, Leeds City Council and the Friends of Leeds Museums made this work possible and work was completed in 2001. If you've never been you have missed something really special.
